Introduction to patents

Patent is a set of exclusive rights granted by the government to a patent holder (or "patentee") for a limited period of time in exchange for a public disclosure of the invention.

Patent rights are territorial i.e. the patent granted in one country is valid only in that particular country. To have patent protection in other countries, a separate patent application has to be filed in other countries as well.
